A Luta Continua
The Struggle Continues
The Portuguese phrase A Luta Continua means “The struggle continues.” It became one of the defining slogans of African liberation movements during the twentieth century. Yet its meaning extends beyond politics — it speaks to a universal human reality. Every generation inherits unfinished work. Every generation faces challenges left unresolved by those who came before. The struggle is never only against external forces. Often, the deepest struggles occur within ourselves.
The Three Struggles
The first struggle was survival — for thousands of years, human beings learned how to live with nature. The second struggle was domination: empires rose, conquests occurred, slavery expanded, and colonial systems spread across the globe. The third struggle — the struggle of our time — is the struggle of consciousness. Political independence has been achieved in many places, yet deeper questions remain: How do people recover memory after centuries of disruption? How do they reclaim dignity? How do they think independently within systems that continue to shape perception?
Memory as Resistance
Every forgotten story recovered is an act of resistance. Every language preserved is an act of resistance. Every song remembered is an act of resistance. Every child taught to think critically is an act of resistance. The struggle continues because forgetting remains powerful.
The Song Continues
A song is never truly finished. It is carried by different voices, interpreted by different generations. Each singer adds something new, yet the melody survives. History works in much the same way. We inherit unfinished songs from those who came before us. Our responsibility is not merely to repeat them — it is to understand them, contribute to them, and pass them forward.
Conclusion
The struggle continues. Not because victory is impossible, but because growth never ends. Each generation receives a torch. Each generation carries it for a while. Then it passes it on. The challenge is not to finish the journey. The challenge is to move it forward. To leave the world a little wiser. A little kinder. A little freer. And to remember that every great river begins with a single drop of rain. The rainmakers understood this. Perhaps it is time we remembered it too. A luta continua.
